pinoy, ika’y pinoy. ipakita sa mundo kung ano ang kaya mo, ibang-iba pinoy wag kang matatakot. ipagmalaki mo pinoy ako, pinoy tayo
2005 was one heck of a year! a broadsheet summed up this year as the year of the ambiguous, of heroes and heels, a year redeemed by men and women who broke records and showed the world that Filipinos are capable of greatness given half a chance. here are some of the things that defined our lives in the year that passed…
it was a year defined by all that was uttered and denied. – hello Garci?!; a year of endless street rallies trying to oust the president only to end up getting hurt without knowing what they’re truly fighting for; revelations of corrupts and the likes; non-stop rise of prices and fares; less job opportunities despite the upsurge of call centers; continuous peso devaluation. all this resulted to an increasing percentage of legal and illegal immigrants–marriage pay-offs, phony visas, fiancé shams…all other modus operandi you can think of basta makaalis lang. hence the continuously erupting term–“TNTs” as popularized by illegal pinoy aliens all over the globe.
it was a year when a lot of Filipinos set the stage for their fellowmen - Precious Lara Quigaman showed off the true beauty of a modern day filipina by bagging the coveted Miss International title; Sea Games championship.
it was a year of great lamentation – the world wept at the death of a great pope (pope john Paul II) and the masa fought for the death of their ‘king’ (Fernando Poe Jr.); it was when the gods tested the land of the free by dropping in hurricanes killing many and resulting to damages amounting to more than a hundred million dollars – a year when many were shaken by the many calamities that shook the earth and the rest of mankind.
it was the year when luxury ruled fashion and every Filipinos’ lifestyle; the rise of Victorian inspired empire waist top, the time when the boho look together with peasant skirts reached nauseating heights; it was also the time when the omnipresent bolero came in tacky knits and cheap beadwork; ipods were on everybody’s pocket or wish list; the campaign for real beauty initiated by Dove celebrated beauty in its diverse and mundane forms; rebonded hair out, wavy hair in; C2 became the healthier alternative to soda; fast food joints started cleaning up their image as the main provider of stuff that make people obese – salads are now available, yes you read it right; unlimited texting; sun cellular; bazaars sprouted like mushrooms throughout metro manila; 168 – every hagglers heaven.
it was the year when pinoy bands lustred in the music scene. more and more fans started patronizing local bands and embracing music that is supposedly an original. on the other side of the shiny penny, it was also this year when local bands started ripping off foreign songs..tsk tsk..
it was the year of fantasy teleseryes, movies and everything in between. kids, don’t let your figment of imagination get the best of you. one delusional actor even spoke of his film’s special effects competing with the lord of the rings’. sure, we’re all for the development of local cinema but please let’s all not get carried away… if Peter Jackson heard of this he could die of heart attack right there and then!
last but not the least, who could forget every pinoy’s ticket to voyeurism – Pinoy Big Brother… i know i would forget that. hay nako people there’s life outside the PBB house. i wonder why a lot of people got hooked on it, but as i always say, kanya-kanyang trip yan. i guess 2005 will not be the same without uma, sam, say and the rest of the pbb clan.
there you go– the best and worst of 2005… i am looking forward to another great year of pitfalls, hits and misses, issues (great and petty ones), elegance and tackiness… but as always i am praying for the best this 2006!!!
